What is Walmart MoneyCard?

The Walmart MoneyCard is a reloadable, prepaid debit card that can be used everywhere Debit MasterCard or Visa debit cards are accepted in the U.S.

One of the best perks of the MoneyCad is the cashback rewards. You can earn 3% cash back at Walmart.com, 2% cash back at Murphy USA and Walmart fuel stations, and 1% cash back at Walmart stores. Your cashback rewards are capped at $75 per year.

The Walmart MoneyCard offers free direct deposit. In addition, you can load your card at Walmart stores and through the MoneyPak network at stores.

MoneyPak can be found at CVS, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Kroger, Rite Aid, Safeway, 7-Eleven, Walgreens, and Walmart.

Top 7 Walmart MoneyCard Complaints & Reviews

Here are the top 7 Walmart MoneyCard Complaints and Reviews as compiled through emails and comments from our readers, including information gathered from other online sources:

Complaint #1 – Increasing Incidents of Fraud

One of the biggest frustrations about the Walmart MoneyCard that cardholders have reported is the growing incidence of fraudulent transactions on the card.

Cardholders have reported that money has been stolen from their account or their account used for purchases at faraway locations without their authorization.

When they contact Walmart MoneyCard customer service, they usually have to endure a long dispute process to try and retrieve their money.

In some cases, even with clear evidence showing that the cardholder did not make the transaction, Walmart MoneyCard still denies their dispute.

This leads to the cardholder losing money they desperately need to make purchases and pay bills.

For a step by step process on how to dispute a MoneyCard transaction, see our post – How to Dispute a Charge on Walmart MoneyCard.

Complaint #2 – Dispute claim denied and account closed

One of the top complaints we have received about the Walmart MoneyCard is cardholders filing disputes for fraud and having their claims denied and accounts closed.

This is done without explanation.

When cardholders call Walmart MoneyCard to find out why their account was permanently closed, they usually get an automated system stating that they are no longer eligible for MoneyCard services.

Complaint #3 – Deposits flagged for review and Account Blocked

Another complaint we have received quite often is the issue of deposits into MoneyCard accounts being flagged for review without notice or explanation.

This includes customers that have received large direct deposits (which Walmart MoneyCard encourages) of their paychecks into their account and the transaction being flagged by Walmart MoneyCard.

First, they are not notified that their deposit has been flagged and their account is temporarily frozen.

Second, once cardholders find out on their own that they cannot withdraw money from their account due to the flag, it takes a while before they are able to get answers regarding why their account was frozen.

This results in lots of frustration as the affected cardholders are unable to get access to their money to pay bills and make purchases while Walmart MoneyCard reviews their deposit.

Complaint #4 – Getting cash from the card is expensive

One of the top complaints about the Walmart MoneyCard is that there is no easy way to withdraw money from the card unless you are taking cash out at a Walmart store.

You cannot go to a bank and just withdraw money from your card. You can do a cashback at a store, which is free.

However, doing a cashback means that you have to spend money to get money from your MoneyCard if you want to avoid ATM fees.

If you do not have a Walmart store that is close to you, then you will have to pay ATM fees each time you withdraw money from your card.

Furthermore, even when you are withdrawing cash from your card at Walmart, you can only take out $100 at a time, otherwise, you will be charged a $3 fee.

For a list of MoneyCard fees, see our post – Walmart MoneyCard Fees (ATM Fees and More).

Complaint #5 – ATMs not returning Cash but money is taken from the account

Another common problem that has been reported by Walmart MoneyCard holders is with ATM transactions where the ATM does not dispense the money requested but the cardholder’s account is charged anyway.

As with other issues regarding returning funds to cardholder accounts, it’s not easy to get the money back.

Some have even reported that once they file a complaint with Walmart MoneyCard, and provide documentation showing that the ATM did not return the money, their claim is dismissed.

Complaint #6 – Declined transactions with a hold on funds

Some of our readers have reported that they have had their funds put on hold when trying to make large purchases with their Walmart MoneyCard.

While most cardholders understand that this is done for their own protection, once they call customer service and verify their identity, they expect the money to be immediately released back into their account.

However, that is not always the case. Walmart MoneyCard can hold the funds for an extended period of time, sometimes as long as 10 days.

This not only prevents the cardholder from making the purchase they were planning to, but it also deprives them of access to the money for other purposes.

Complaint #7 – Problem speaking to customer service from certain phones

One of the most recent complaints we have received from numerous customers is how difficult it has become to speak to a live person at Walmart MoneyCard using some cell phone carriers.

Cardholders have reported that this is a recent development, which comes as a surprise for the many cardholders who love using MoneyCard and have had a good experience overall.

Here’s what has been reported:

When you call the number on the back of the card to speak to a live person, you get a message after selecting English or Spanish that “we are unable to assist you at this time”.

It then tells you to refer to the Walmart MoneyCad website or mobile application for account information and help – then the phone hangs up.

However, when you try calling from a different phone, you are able to get through to customer service.

Walmart Money card claims this is an issue with the cell phone carrier, however, many cardholders are not sure that’s the case.

WALMART MONEYCARD horrible customer service

walmart money card is horrible if your just using it to pay your bills and do online shopping. They will charge you to get a new bank card after they block your card. They will tell you to not use your account because it may be compromised. Therefore, whatever bills you have scheduled will not be able to process. Also, once they block your card and send you a new one you are unable to do anything. You can't even withdraw your own remaining money that is still remaining in your account. They do not answer their phones and they claim that speaking to a rep is the best way. They have dispute forms on their website but no email address/fax number to expedite. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE PERIOD!!

Moneycard

I have a monthly direct deposit onto the Walmart Money Card because I thought they were a trustworthy institution. But they are withholding my funds from me because of 'suspicious activity'. Thieves, thats what they are. I have bills to pay this month and needs to take care of but they don't care. I would not reccomend this care to ANYBODY.

No buyer protection

I made a purchase in April, never received my order, dealt with the merchant until July when I was promised a refund. I never received a refund. I contacted the better business bureau, and law enforcement local to the merchant. Both told me there are a huge amount or people with the same issue with this merchant, and they are not returning communications with anyone. Both also told me that I have to file a dispute with my bank to resolve this. Walmart Moneycard/Greendot refuses to do disputes against merchants that do not provide services or goods purchased, only transactions that were not authorized. They are the ONLY card provider that has this policy. This is a protection that every other card provider gives. I am immediately canceling my card, and will never use it. They charge a fee to use it, and give no benefits for it. There are plenty of other companies that charge no fees, and give many more benefits
