Stimulus Check FAQs

Here are the most frequently asked Stimulus Check questions:

Where Is My Stimulus Check?

If you qualify for the third stimulus check of $1,400 and the IRS has your current banking information and/or mailing information on file, here’s what will happen:

The IRS will send your stimulus payment to you either by direct deposit or check.

However, if you are not eligible for a stimulus payment now, you may be able to claim a tax credit later when you file your taxes.

Additionally, you can use the IRS online tool to check the status of your stimulus check.

Here’s how:

Visit IRS.gov and use the Get My Payment tool to check on the status of your stimulus payment.

The tool will show if a payment has been issued and whether the payment was sent by direct deposit or mail.

Click here for the Get My Payment tool from the IRS.

Will There Be a $2,000 Third Stimulus Check?

Unfortunately, No.

However, the American Rescue Plan allocates funds for $1,400 checks for a third stimulus round.

Instead of a $2,000 payment, this $1,400 payment would be added to the second round’s $600 payments, for a total of $2,000.

Will My 2020 Tax Return Affect My Stimulus Amount?

In some cases, yes.

If you’re entitled to a larger payment based on your 2020 tax return compared to your 2019 return, then here’s what you need to know.

If your third stimulus check was based on your 2019 tax return but you qualify for more money based on your 2020 return, here’s what the IRS will do:

You will be eligible to receive the difference as a tax credit.

However, if it is determined after you file your 2020 tax return that you should have received a small stimulus payment, you still get to keep the higher payment that was sent to you based on your 2019 return.

How do I Check the Status of my Stimulus Check?

If you have not yet received your third stimulus check for $14,00, you can use the IRS’s “Get My Payment” tool.

Click here for the Get My Payment tool from the IRS.

The online tool lets you:

  • Check the status of your stimulus payment;
  • Confirm your payment type (paper check or direct deposit); and
  • Get a projected direct deposit or paper check delivery date (or find out if a payment hasn’t been scheduled).

If you checked the IRS website and there is no update about your check, do not be discouraged.

You have to keep checking the website frequently until you get an updated status from the IRS.
